Research

The ultimate goal of our group is to further the understanding of how ion channel work in terms of their underlying protein structure, and to use this information to design ion channel modulators that in due turn could be developed as useful drugs to treat channelopathies. In particular, we are currently focused on the TRP channel family that is believed to be a gateway of sensory transduction. The immediate aim is to unveil the molecular determinants of channels function, and to attempt to solve the structure of members of this channel superfamily. In addition, we are interested in unveiling the molecular composition of the channel´s interactome, and to investigate the functional relevance of these complexes. We use a combination of molecular and structural biology approaches, along with genomic and combinatorial screens of libraries. Therapeutically-validated targets enter a drug discovery platform where specific and high throughput assays are implemented for the screening and deconvolution of chemical libraries. Identified compounds are further optimized to obtain valuable pharmacological tools or potential candidates for drug development. A major therapeutic arena of our group is peripheral neurogenic inflammation that contributes to several human diseases.
